What was the outcome of the people who were supposedly resurrected in the account found in Matthew 27:51-53?

People who died before Jesus did had the hope of a resurrection back to the earth when it was restored to a paradise. They then hoped to live forever. (Psalm 37:10, 11, 29)

The early Christians had the hope of a heavenly resurrection to rule with Christ in God's heavenly government. (Revelation 5:9, 10, 20:6)

(Matthew 27:51-53) . . . and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split. 52 And the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the holy ones who had fallen asleep were raised up 53 (and people coming out from among the tombs after his being raised up entered into the holy city), and they became visible to many people.

Many people misunderstand these verses, thinking that there was a resurrection to life from these tombs.

And it is true that the expression 'raised up' can mean 'resurrection' but it doesn't always mean this.

just as 'fast' can mean to move quickly or if one is held fast, fast means to be unmovable. (a totally opposite meaning)

What is being described in these verses is not a resurrection to life, but the corpses of those in the tombs / graves became visible after the earthquake that had just occurred.

'many bodies / corpses' became visible.

‘Tombs Opened’ at Jesus’ Death. The text at Matthew 27:52, 53 concerning “the memorial tombs [that] were opened” as the result of an earthquake occurring at the time of Jesus’ death has caused considerable discussion, some holding that a resurrection occurred. However, a comparison with the texts concerning the resurrection makes clear that these verses do not describe a resurrection but merely a throwing of bodies out of their tombs, similar to incidents that have taken place in more recent times, as in Ecuador in 1949 and again in Sonsón, Colombia, in 1962, when 200 corpses in the cemetery were thrown out of their tombs by a violent earth tremor.—El Tiempo, Bogotá, Colombia, July 31, 1962.

All souls that have ever lived in the flesh, are now on one side or the other side of the gulf that currently exists in heaven. Luke 16 KJV, Jesus Christ described the gulf that currently exists in heaven and in 1 Peter 3:20 KJV, Jesus Christ went to those souls on the other side of the gulf that had already lived in and 'died', left their flesh bodies. Jesus Christ went there and taught the souls from the beginning of this age that did not have the mercy provided by God through Jesus Christ because they had left their flesh bodies before Jesus Christ laid down His flesh life and rightfully, legally, fairly took His place at the right hand of God. God is fair and all those souls had the opportunity to cross the gulf through their faith in Jesus Christ at that time.

All souls that have ever lived in and then left the flesh body are still alive in heaven right now until the endtime events happen. Judgment Day does not happen until after the thousand years millennium. Even satan, who God condemned to perish on Judgment Day, is still alive for his role in the end time events. Ecclesiastes 12:7 KJV says that all souls *return* to God Who gave them and all our flesh bodies *return* to the earthly minerals that they are made of.

So, those souls were with God on His side of the gulf in heaven, while their flesh bodies were in graves, when Jesus Christ resurrected and it appeared to the people in the city that they had come out of their graves. God allowed those souls, which are in His dimension even now, to be briefly seen for the sake of the people in the city, so they could know that we are more than just our flesh bodies.

The heavenly government is actually Jesus Christ and His followers who will be teaching His Word for the thousand years while satan is bound, Revelation 20 KJV. Then, satan will be released again for a short time to test the souls that are still mortal and may die the second death. Only the souls that overcome the testing of satan through their faith in Jesus Christ will be in the third age of eternity. During the millennium, everyone will know that Jesus Christ is real, but everyone will be taught God's Word without satan's interference, since he will be bound those thousand years.

God will restore the earth to its former pristine state at the beginning of the third age of eternity that was destroyed after Genesis 1:1 first age that lasted millions/billions of years before satan's rebellion and downfall caused the katabole that made the earth void. God made this second age where we all live in these temporary flesh bodies, born through woman, through the amniotic sac, all memories of the first age wiped from our minds so we can make up our minds in innocence to observe and decide whether to follow satan's way or God's Way. The ones who overcome in the flesh will be teachers and will be able to go to loved ones on the other side of the gulf and help them prepare for the test.
