Spanish speak Castellano (Spain Spanish) and Mexicans speak Español (Latin American Spanish). The pronunciation is a little bit different.

The Spanish used in all the twenty three (soon to be 24) nations of La Hispanidad, represented by the Association of Spanish Language Academies is the same language, although there are many dialects in each region and country. The motto of the association is significant: "Una estirpe, una lengua y un destino" ("One lineage, one language, and one destiny") Dia de la Hispanidad (Oct 12) is a national holiday in Spain that celebrates this unity. It coincides with Columbus day in the US.

Spain itself is a nation of many separate languages and many dialects of Spanish. The dialect spoken in Andalusia is closest to the dialects spoken in Mexico, Central and South America. Although the leaders of the voyages of conquest and exploration may have been from Madrid or elsewhere in Spain. most of the Sailors were from the area around the Atlantic seaports, Cadiz and others.

I have travelled to Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Panama, Peru, and Paraguay as well as Spanish-speaking areas of the United States. There is little problem in anyone understanding anyone else's Spanish.

I did notice one significant general difference. The signs pointing to public toilets in Spain contain the word, "Aseos"

while in the Americas it is "Baño."

It's similar to the difference between British English and American English. Different accents, grammar and outside influences.

As with any language, there will also be regional differences in accents. The educational level and social class of the speaker affects the spoken language as well. For instance a migrant farm worker from Juarez, Mexico will speak differently than a Neurosurgeon from Mexico City.

Both in blood line and language, Mexicans have a strong Mayan and Aztec bckground that is missing in pure Spanish

Mexicans don't use that horrid 'th' they use in Spain...grathias for gracias, Barthelona for Barcelona, Jimineth for Jiminez.

If you speak like the King you can pretend to be superior to the peasants.

The vast majority of the two are the same, but yes there are words that have different meanings between the two countries or ones that are unique to one or the other. Probably the one you need to be aware of the most is coger. In Spain it means to catch a bus or to pick up something, etc., but in Mexico it means to have sex. So to avoid potential embarrassment in central America use one of its synonyms when wanting to say you are picking something up etc.

No, some of the sounds are pronounced differently, and the slang is very different in the two countries.

They don't even speak a universal Spanish in Spain...there's regional differences, dialectic differences.

Even in Central and South America it differs, sure they can all converse with each others but there is a distinct difference in accents, terminologies and dialects....like every other wide spread language.

It's probably the same difference as American English and real English.
