Plain scone vs. American biscuits: is there any real difference, or are they the same?

They are not even close to being the same thing. A scone is a crumbly textured, triangle pastry with a variety of fruit chunks and sprinkled with confectioner's sugar crystals. A biscuit is a round, flaky, layered pastry with butter only on top, usually covered in a gravy or sauce. Other than being both pastries, they are not the same. You would never, ever substitute one for the other. It's like saying a donut is the same as a sandwich. cheers.

  • They are effectively the same thing. Scones are eaten buttered as cake. What Americans call biscuits are eaten with a savoury course.
