    The Catcher In the Rye

I was like, "WTF is this even about?" Seriously. I think it had social relevance at one time, like it was considered cutting edge and racy back in the day, but we're so far beyond that now. A kid that swears a lot isn't even slightly surprising. And relating to a character who gets kicked out of a boarding school and bums around Manhattan making calls from old-fashioned telephone booths to his weirdly adult-acting kid sister is just not happening anymore. Do boarding schools even exist anymore? I'm sure they do, but it's not like enough people go to them or have gone to them to be able to really identify with what the main character, Holden, is going through--not nowadays. People talk about The Catcher in the Rye like it's this be-all and end-all of a literary work, but if it ever was, it only was in context and that context is so far passed that I couldn't even find a shred of what the hell it was even supposed to all mean.
