Writing chapter summaries.?

I'm hiring a professional to edit my book, based on a chapter by chapter summaries because I'm stuck and before I go on with line edits and beta readers etc., I need a professional opinion. The problem is, I don't know how detailed to make my chapter synopsis. How long? Do I need to give a play by play of what's happening or should I just include the main ideas? Do I include subplots and foreshadowing, etc.? I'm so lost. Does anyone have any experience with this?

None of these answered my question. Every time I post on yahoo, nobody actually answers the question. I already have someone who's going to help me edit my FINISHED outline, because I don't want to waste time polishing my manuscript and sending it out to beta readers when she can tell me whats wrong with it right off the bat. I didn't ask for advice on editing service, or when's the best time to edit my manuscript. I asked what a chapter synopsis should include.

    Chapters should not exist in fiction. They are extremely pretentious. Even more so if you give them chapter names. If you just have "1" "2" 3" etc that's not horrible but named chapters are super lame.

    Nope.

    Nobody you hire is going to do it piece by piece when the story isn't even fully written yet. Write the story! Finish it, do several rewrites THEN you get the person in to help out with what you still can't fix.

    Are you going to send the list of chapter summaries to the editor, and then they tell you what they think you need to change? Then why not ask the editor what they want to see in that list, instead of guessing?

  • A "professional editor" isn't going to help with this. The only person who will take such a job is a charlatan looking to milk a sucker. Well, them, a therapist, or a creative writing teacher. Any way you look at it, this isn't an editor's job.

    You're basically looking for someone to critique your plans to write. What is the point of this if you can't write?

    It's probably best if you hire a professional to actually write the whole book for you. Easier in the long run.
