Why are you told to check pulses at the neck or wrist? Why not feel the heart directly?

The heart is nicely hidden under your sternum....ish.
Good luck getting a pulse from there unless your extremely tachycardic.

There are places on the body where arteries are close to the surface. They're easier to feel than the heart.
