How likely are suicidal people to attempt again?
My sister, is a danger to others and herself, i think she should be in a psych hospital or in prison. She has hurt people several times and gives everyone at home emotional and even physical abuse. She, in her life, has attempted suicide 3 times. She tried to attempt suicide like 4 weeks ago and before that, a little over half a year ago. She's 28. I told her dr. and my parents that she shouldn't be living as an outpatient, she should be locked up somewhere before she seriously hurts someone. I don't feel comfortable being around her at all. I'm surprised why she's not in jail or locked up or in a psych hospital. Her dr. knows about this and isn't doing anything. How likely will she attempt again?
@unit go ahead and kill yourself
Ur messed up and I dont get why you feel the need to troll around and try to say sht like that, do you even know me? Stfu
I think that if they attempted, and repeatedly did it then its likely they'll do it again
rebecca, i wasn't trying to decide her fate but asking a question of what people think and if she might attempt to hurt others and herself again. I think if someone's a danger, they should be institutionalized even if its temporarily like even if its just for several months, etc. because no one is doing anything.
She's not like 'retarded' or disabled or unable to understand right from wrong or incapable of standing trial if someone does press charges on her. And she usually does not seem depressed. I think she should go to jail before she does kill someone, mental disorder or not, her case isn't severe enough for the dr. to hold her in the hospital either, that's why they haven't. I sometimes think she's even faking it to get away with it- she's a sicker person.

The problem is that under current laws and court rulings, it is next to impossible to commit a person involuntarily. That is, until after she commits a crime.
And then, common sense tells us that a person with a psychotic disorder may not be fully responsible. Yet the only way to hold her is in jail, since mental hospitals can't do that anymore.
I have known plenty of people in this circumstance. It is heartbreaking.
I suggest that first you look up and call your nearest chapter of NAMI [National Alliance for the Mentally Ill]. You get a lot of help from them in learning how to deal with your ill sister. How to help her to the extent possible. And how not to let her ruin your own life. Your parents should go too. They have excellent educational programs, support groups, and contacts that can help you.
They also have resources for the actual patient, if and when she wants help.
In a lot of cities, there are police trained in dealing with the mentally ill. So when you call the police, let them know that she has a mental illness. And do call whenever she does something illegal, such as assaulting anybody or stealing. Even if it's not very serious, at least report it.
Good luck to all of you.

Will she try again? No one can say for certain, but the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. You aren't the person who gets to decide her fate. That much is clear. Only if there is an imminent, observable danger are people isolated.

Keep calling the police when she is hurting herself or someone else. Eventually they will hopefully make her an inpatient of a psych ward in a hospital.
