Does anyone know of a lab that I can send a pet food sample to check for contaminants.?

I have an older dog, but he has been healthy until recently. Two days after buying the normal brand of his dry dog food, just a different flavor, he became very ill, stopped eating, vomiting and loss of use in hind legs. Blood work at the vet shows kidney failure. There are no recalls on this dog food brand, but I have found a couple of websites where many people have complained about the brand and kidney failure in their pets.

Have you spoken to your vet about the cause of this? Kidney failure tends to occur in older dogs and you might not see the signs of vomiting, etc. until the disease has progressed, as the dog can still function as the kidneys first started to lose function. Be sure to talk more to your vet about this, because with the information given, this could have been a chronic and slow process (not necessarily involving this diet) and the signs were not apparent until now. Keep an eye out for more information/recalls on the food but definitely talk to your vet about if this could have been a chronic process or if it was acute and due to a sudden cause.

How awful. This link may help: http://petfood.aafco.org/Testing-Laboratories

The listed labs have phone numbers, so you can call and ask any questions you may have. You could also try the FDA and UC Davis. Good luck.
