Why does the Bible say that the Moon is a light when it is only a reflector of light...it is not a LIGHT?

"a lesser light to govern the night" it never specified that it produced the light, it simply means that the moon is a source of light. And as of today, scientists conclude that the moon is a source of light.

When the Bible was written it was not known that the Moon is simply a reflector of sunlight. Many scientific facts were not known in the period of about a thousand years during which the Bible was written.

Even two hundred years ago, at a time when science was coming to the fore, the age of the universe was not known - a fact which has only been truly known for less than a century.

Tonight probably every weatherman in the United States said that the sun set at a certain time, and rose at another time. We KNOW, and s/he knows, that the sun did NOT rise and set. Those are figures of speech describing the appearance of what is happening. Similarly, the moon appears to be a light (and it does provide light, even if it does not generate that light itself.)

Our Intelligent Designer used a very elementary vocabulary for mankind to understand at a time when mankind had 0 scientific knowledge to understand anything otherwise. Our Intelligent Designer knew as mankind's scientific knowledge advanced over time we would come to realize why God worded things the way He did.

The Bible is mostly irrational and omits such basic stuff as the Earth going round the Sun or a hint that much disease is caused by germs. You can't even get an idea of how to build a water mill. The idea of the Moon reflecting the light of the Sun is far beyond the mentality of the Bible writers even though it was known more than 2,000 years ago.

It is so bad that some people are terrified of the eclipse that will happen soon.

You're reading a book by moonlight. I ask you where you're getting the light to read by and you say ... ? Most people would say "from the moon".

Sorry to hear you cannot see the moon, but we can all see it, and yes it is a light.

The problem with the moon is that it spends just as much time in the sky during the day as it does during the night. At the full moon, the moon rises as the sun sets and sets as the sun rises but the rest of the time the period the moon spends in the night sky gets less and less until at the new moon, there is no moon at all at night. More than 400 years ago, Shakespeare knew the moon was unreliable:

JULIET

O, swear not by the moon, the inconstant moon,

That monthly changes in her circled orb,

The Bible was just wrong - as it often is.

You can't deny that at night, with a moon lit sky, you can see how to get around better than when there is no moon. No matter how the moon gives us light, it STILL GIVES US LIGHT. Don't be so picky.
