Usually its Bearing failure...You should Pack the wheel bearings about once a year...WITH A GOOD HIGH TEMP GREASE !!! A good high temp grease will be VERY thick....If your not sure, as to how its done properly, I recommend taking it somewhere like, Sears, Goodyear, Midas, etc. Have them check the Seals, Bearings, & Bearing Races, for flaking of the metal finish...On Axles that dont have Brakes, it shouldnt be much more $60 or $70 per Axle.

Install a set of "bearing buddies" that have a grease zerk on the spindle caps and keep them well greased. Also, bring along a spare set of spindle bearings with a large adjustable wrench and a grease gun in case you need them on the side of the road. Check the spindles for heat buildup every time you stop for fuel and add grease every 500 miles or so. Boat trailer bearings need regular periodic service due to the fact that they are submerged in water constantly whilst you transition the boat from the trailer. When adjusting the spindle bearing thrust, tighten the castle nut until there is drag, then back it off until the wheel spins freely at the closest castle nut alignment to the spindle arbor lock pin hole, many failures arise fast when not doing this critical bearing thrust adjustment properly. You should repack the bearings before you hit the road for this 1,700 mile round trip!

They had a flat and no spare or they haven't properly serviced the wheel bearings on the trailer.

The issue with a lot of trailers is that they never get any maintenance. Hub failures are routinely caused by seized wheel bearings due to lack of lubrication.

In boat trailers wheel bearings should be repacked at the end of every season. And it's not like it's hard to do either.

Need to clean and repack or replace wheel bearings on occasion.

Poor maintenance. Expecting to park the trailer up for the winter or a long time and expecting it to just work without checks and maintenance. Pulling the trailer with small wheels too fast.

In MY experience, the most common problem on a trailer is under inflated tires that overheat and shred. People get in a hurry and leave on a trip without checking the tire pressure. I've been guilty of that myself also.

I once pulled into a filling station for gas and noticed one of the tires on my trailer was a shredded mess. Lucky it was a two axle trailer.

Another less common problem is wheel bearings that haven't been greased for MANY years failing.

Most trailers spend a lot of time sitting unused, so people usually neglect care and maintenance.

Lack of maintenance.( cleaning and putting fresh and plenty of grease in wheel bearings)

Also overloading the trailer.

Another thing to check condition of tires and use correct air pressure.
