why does playing dead work for some animals?

    Some predators can on see or detect their prey if there is movement. For example, tarantulas can detect vibrations with the hairs on their body.

    If the animal attacked because it felt threatened, if you are "dead" and no longer a threat, the animal loses interest. On the other hand, if it attacked you because it wanted to eat you, playing dead does no good.
