Has everything to do with making cars look pretty and sporty. Besides, tow truck operators now make more money because every disabled car needs to be towed.

Hi so it was only a fashion actually not needed as todays car bodies are designed to be less danger to pedestrians.

Cars do have bumpers. They are steel, supported by shock absorbers. To look pretty, they are covered by body colored plastic.

Why don't cars have bumpers anymore?
I don't get it.
People hang those stupid looking rubber things out of their trunks... or their fenders get all scuffed, scratched, and destroyed...
A simple piece of hard rubber designed nicely into the fenders would look great, and serve an awesome purpose. Cars used to have them. Who wouldn't want them again?
Also, this was just brought to my attention by my wife. While I'm about to do my best to mend my ways, I realize why I'm the guy who people scream at for banging into the car in front and in back of me. When I learned to drive, cars had bumpers and it wasn't a big deal. When you park, you know you went too far when you hit the car behind you. :) Not hard, but kinda tap it. I realize finally that not everybody parks like that, but it's taken many years... yeah. I want bumpers back. Anyone agree. Or disagree?
Would you rather have this:

Modern cars still have bumpers, however, they are just built inside the car's frame and covered rather than visible from the outside.
According to Wikipedia, "current design practice is for the bumper structure on modern automobiles to consist of a plastic cover over a reinforcement bar made of steel, aluminum, fiberglass composite, or plastic. Bumpers of most modern automobiles have been made of a combination of polycarbonate (PC) and Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) called PC/ABS."

They do, they are just mostly integrated into the paint scheme and often hidden behind plastic body molding. It's a fashion thing.
