William Shirer's "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich." After reading it, and listening to my father's stories about how he was a hero in WWII (I have seen him riding in a Jeep as one of Patton's MP's in WWII documentary films), I decided to become a Third Reich Historian. In the Winter Term of 1981 at Penn State, I was a graduate student teaching assistant, and I helped my professor teach History of Fascism. In that class, I met a very beautiful woman who sixteen days after the course ended became my soul mate. Our relationship lasted 33 years, 22 days until she was taken by cancer.
