With a 7.1 earthquake killing 200, multiple destructive hurricanes, fires, and flooding, is it the end of the world?

If it were so then every single credit card company in the world would have stated in their last statement that no further payments are required. Toys R Us would have filed for bankruptcy protection. Donald Trump would be in bed fast asleep instead of tweeting in the wee hours of the morning. .

No, a bit of a statistical spike in natural disasters, but not the end of the world.

None of the many prior predictions of the end of the world have been correct, so I don't know why this one would be. But, if you really believe it, please send me all your money since you won't need it anymore.

Just 13 years ago a tsunami in Indonesia killed 70,000 people! Look at the list of the worst earthquakes in history and you'll see 200 people is not that significant. (I mean, except for those 200 people, and their families. I don't mean to minimize it, but in comparison it's not bad at all.)

The Bible says that the apocalypse will be preceded by wars, fires, floods, earthquakes, etc. So every time there's a war or an earthquake Christians say 'See? The time is near!' But they've been saying this for 2000 years and they haven't been right yet! (Though they might be someday.)

The fact is, things are are better now in the whole world than they ever have been in history. Fewer people are dying in natural disasters, wars, epidemics, famines, etc. than have EVER died before. It's just that when something like this happens the news media go crazy and you hear about it over and over. Especially if it happens here.

Hurricane Harvey hitting Houston was the most -expensive- natural disaster in US history. Meaning it destroyed the most property, it did the most damage to homes and buildings and infrastructure, but it did NOT kill the most people, not by a long shot. It just happened to hit a densely-populated major city. Hurricane Harvey killed 70 people, but in 1900 a hurricane hit Galveston that killed EIGHT THOUSAND people!
