'Thor throws his 45 kg hammer at the Incredible Hulk at 75 m/s. The Hulk catches the hammer and manages to stop it over a distance of 0.80 m.

A) determine the acceleration of the hammer as the Hulk stops it.

    Use the general equation for velocity in terms of acceleration and displacement: v² = v₀² + 2ax.

    Solve this for a: a = (v² - v₀²)/(2x).

    Here, v = 0 m/s (when the Hulk stops Mjölnir); v₀ = 75 m/s; x = 0.80 m. Substitute:

    (0 m²/s² - 5625 m²/s²) / (2(0.80 m)) = -3515.625 m/s². With 2 significant figures, this is -3500 m/s².

    (Note that the mass of the hammer is irrelevant here.)

    A = -½ V○²/D = -0.5*75^2/0.8 = -3.52 km/s²
