    MnO4{-} is a famous oxidizing agent.

    And if you are unfamiliar with MnO4{-}, the Mn atom has an oxidation state of 7+ in MnO4{-} and 2+ in Mn{2+}, so it undergoes reduction in the given reaction. By the nature of redox reactions, the atom that gets reduced is contained in the oxidizing agent.
