Atheists: What do you think contributes most to the mentality of most believers - stupidity, gullibility or ignorance?

Personally, I think it's a combination of all three but what are your thoughts based on the believers you encounter?

Normally, it's being introduced to the church as a child. There, they are told that is they believe in the fairy tale of "God", then they will go to heaven and be immortal; however, if they don't, then they will go to hell and be tortured forever. It's simply being scared into believing the fairy tale.

Now, they don't want to let go of the fairy tale out of fear, ignorance, and stupidity because of their gullibility in the past. I've seen all of these on YA as well as at my old church (I was an extreme Christian for 14 years before becoming Atheist).

Therefore, I think that it is all three, plus fear.

Need, I do not disrespect the beliefs of others in ignorance of the importance of such to them. I do take exception to the assumption that everyone else requires or desires that which they have chosen.

Every person has a different combination of those three.

Brainwashing and indoctrination. It works best with young kids who don't know enough to question such nonsense.

Superstitious belief is caused by an insufficient understanding of human history and how cause and effect relationships account for reality which causes the mind to continually collapse onto unanswered curiosity and forces it to create supernatural explanations that easily accounts for otherwise, complex scientific phenomena.

If you look at all of the reasons why people believe in gods, demigods and devils, you will note that they are all arguments from ignorance:

If god doesn't exist, then why does ......

If god doesn't exist, then how come .....

If god doesn't exist, then where did we.....

If god doesn't exist, then who created....

If god doesn't exist, then what makes...

The superstitious beliefs that were indoctrinated into us at an early age are gradually discarded when the individual develops the ability to discern fact from fiction, myth from reality, and is usually acquired by people who have completed rigorous studies in philosophy, theology, history or the medical and natural sciences.

People believing what they were taught to believe when they were children, which would fall under gullibility, I suppose.

I find it varies greatly from person to person.

Gullibility and ignorance are the most common two, I'm tempted to add wishful thinking to the list but that's largely born of gullibility and ignorance, just coupled with cowardice in the face of reality.

Don't you consider mockery a form of bullying?

Stupidity - everything else follows naturally from that!

Gullibility + faith. Wanting something to be true because it makes them feel better, and not having the skills to critically asses information, leading to confirmation bias.
