Are Deist necessarily spiritual and if not, what makes a deist spiritual or not-spiritual?
I ve always defined by particular set of wordy views as "agnostic deism".
I affirm that I "want" to believe in a god, but cannot, and will not, say that "there is for sure" one.
Now, a set of Jehovah Witnesses (pleasant fellows) came knocking on my door and we talked briefly, and they asked my thoughts thereafter. I said I was not religious. And they followed with, "are you spiritual". And that caught me off guard (I said I am not).
So my question is, what exactly determines if a person is "spiritual"? Is it a believe in a god in general, or is it something more?
Note: I m not asking about your personal opinions on theism or religion = |

People have always had a need to believe in a larger world that underlies our own, an unseen world beneath nature and science and what we know. It's part of human nature. The whole history of mankind is the history of these beliefs, starting with vague beliefs in the spirits of trees and rocks and rivers and the sun and moon, and growing more sophisticated over the millennia right up to the complicated religions of today.
A lot of people have believed this kind of thought is 'obsolete' because we have science now and we know a lot more about what underlies our 'reality'. But if religion was going to go obsolete, it would have done so hundreds of years ago. The fact that religion still exists shows there's still a need for it.
You can be 'spiritual' but not belong to a church. You can have respect for that unseen world, wonder about it and how it affects you, etc. without subscribing to any particular set of beliefs.
Deism was a religion based on science, based on the empirical knowledge we've accumulated since modern religions began, thousands of years ago. Even in its day (centuries ago now) Deism realized that when religion and science disagree, science always wins in the end. They believed that the scientific method was the tool God gave us to learn about his universe. Natural law, they believed, was supreme, unbreakable, so the only way really to learn about The Creator was by studying his creation, not through the biased interpretation and manipulation of scriptures.
Because natural law is supreme, Deists didn't believe God gets involved in the world. A 'miracle' is, by definition, a place where God decides to suspend his own natural law, and Deists believed that doesn't happen, that any phenomenon you witness or experience can be explained through scientific facts and rules. So the scientific search for knowledge and the spiritual search for truth were one in the same! Deists have that 'religious' respect and wonder for the laws of nature, not an unseen supernatural world.

Do you consider things on a spiritual plane? Like you mention - "I affirm that I "want" to believe in a god". You might say, this is a spiritual inclination. There is something in you that promotes your desire to know and/or believe in a God. Note what this says about the spirit of a man - 1 Corinthians 2:11 For who among men knows the things of a man except the man’s spirit within him? - - - - No one else can understand what spirit motivates you, or moves you to think or act in a certain way, when affected by certain things, because what motivates you originates within your own mind and heart. - - - - Likewise, with God's spirit - we cannot know it. At least not unless he reveals it to us. - The rest of that Scripture in 1 Corinthians 2:11 says -
So, too, no one has come to know the things of God except the spirit of God. - - - - But, God wants us to know about him, his spirit, what motivates him. - - - - Note what the next Scripture says about God revealing,or giving to the Bible writer, his spirit - 1 Corinthians 2:12 - Now we received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit that is from God, so that we might know the things that have been kindly given us by God. - - - - This Scripture indicates that God wants mankind to know about him - his spirit. And note what this Scripture says about this knowledge - 1 Timothy 2:4 – whose (God’s) will is that all sorts of people should be saved and come to an accurate knowledge of truth. - - - - God wants people to know the truth about him. In fact the Scriptures show that God has an enemy that does not want man to have any accurate knowledge of God. He in fact works to blind the minds of people - 2 Corinthians 4:4 - among whom the god of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, so that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ, who is the image of God, might not shine through. - - - - And Satan is able to blind the minds of people that are not spiritual - that do not consider things of a spiritual nature. Satan even gets people to follow him in his efforts to mislead people and keep them blind to spiritual matters - 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 – 13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself keeps disguising himself as an angel of light. 15 It is therefore nothing extraordinary if his ministers also keep disguising themselves as ministers of righteousness. But their end will be according to their works. - - - - But note what Jesus said would be the experience of those that recognize that they have a spiritual need and take action to satisfy that spiritual need - Matthew 5:3 - “Happy are those conscious of their spiritual need, since the Kingdom of the heavens belongs to them. - - - - When he refers to those "conscious" of their spiritual need, he is referring to those who will take action to filling that need. God created us with a spiritual capacity. The ability to seek and understand things in a spiritual sense - in the sense of what motivates us. - - - - If we consider God's word in a spiritual sense, it can have a very valuable effect on us. Note how this Scripture describes God's word - Hebrews 4:12 - For the word of God is alive and exerts power and is sharper than any two-edged sword and pierces even to the dividing of soul and spirit, and of joints from the marrow, and is able to discern thoughts and intentions of the heart. - - - - The word of God is alive - spiritually speaking. And can exert a powerful influence on us. When we consider it, it can help us to discern the thoughts and intentions of our hearts. Our motivating force - or spirit. - - - - Note how the Scriptures describe the powerful effect that God's word had on these people - 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 - 9 Or do you not know that unrighteous people will not inherit God’s Kingdom? Do not be misled. Those who are sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, men who submit to homosexual acts, men who practice homosexuality, 10 thieves, greedy people, drunkards, revilers, and extortioners will not inherit God’s Kingdom. 11 AND YET THAT IS WHAT SOME OF YOU WERE. But you have been washed clean; you have been sanctified; you have been declared righteous in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and with the SPIRIT of our God. - - - - You have probably heard of, and maybe even know of people that have made some very drastic changes in their lives because of a knowledge of God, and from the power of his word. - - - - We do have to be careful to discern what is truthful, and what is just some miraculous claims. But just as these Scriptures indicate, people are helped by God's word to make changes in their lives in order to be acceptable to God. - - - - The Scriptures describe
God as a very loving, merciful Father - 2 Corinthians 1:3 & 4 - 3 Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our trials so that we may be able to comfort others in any sort of trial with the comfort that we receive from God. - - - - He knows we inherited sinful, or bad tendencies from Adam - Romans 5:12 - That is why, just as through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because they had all sinned —. - - - - But he also knows that we are not responsible for these bad tendencies. So, he provides a way for us to be set free from this condition in the future, and helps us to cope with it right now. - - - - To understand these things, takes some time, but to help satisfy your mind right now, I want to share information about this help that God provides. It all comes back to obedience - the opposite of Adam's disobedience mentioned above - Romans 5:19 - For just as through the disobedience of the one man many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one person many will be made righteous. - - - - When we fight to do what is right according to God's standards, even when we fall short, and make mistakes, God forgives us - as long as we do not succumb to practicing what is bad - 1 John 2:1 - My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not commit a sin. And yet, if anyone does commit a sin, we have a helper with the Father, Jesus Christ, a righteous one. - - - - How does Jesus help us if we commit a sin (but not practicing sin)? He gave his perfect life to ransom (buy back) what Adam lost - Matthew 20:28 - Just as the Son of man came, not to be ministered to, but to minister and to give his life as a ransom in exchange for many.” - - - - This is another subject to learn later, but Jesus was without sin - equal to the first perfect man - Adam. So since he was without sin, as the scripture indicates above, he could provide God with the value of his perfect life, in order to cover over the sins of all mankind that will obey, instead of the disobedient course of Adam. Hebrews 4:15 - For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tested in all respects as we have, but without sin. - - - - That's why the Scripture tells us this - John 3:36 - The one who exercises faith in the Son has everlasting life; the one who disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him. - - - - This is a LOT of information to try to digest at one time. But you can see the value of looking at things in a spiritual sense. And since God wants us to take in accurate knowledge (1 Timothy 2:4 quoted above) we do well to follow this advice - Acts 17:11 . . . carefully examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. - - - - Since Jesus says that God's word is truth - John 17:17 - Sanctify them by means of the truth; your word is truth. - - - - And that taking in this knowledge will lead one to everlasting life if they act on it - John 17:3 - This means everlasting life, their coming to know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. - - - - So, I encourage you to look at this, but ALWAYS compare it to the Scriptures, to make sure you are indeed getting the truth -

Spiritual means relating to or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things. You seek spiritual enlightenment and those qualities and values of the spirit rather than those of the flesh. It does not relate to or mean a particular religion or faith. However, a person who is spiritual by nature is frequently attracted to an organized set of beliefs, writings, ceremony, and dogma...religion.

I've always heard it as a synonym for religious.
