Protestant Christians, where does the Bible say that itself is the only source of truth?

Is that a tradition of men?

Update:

Ray:

John 16:13

"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come." God sent His Son and His Spirit -- not a book (as important as it is.)

Bobby Jim: Who is that Word? By His Word God spoke things into existence. Jesus is that Word.

Ernest: You keep all the law? Remarkable. Jesus came to fulfill the law; Christianity is not Judaism.

Update 2:

Hogie:

Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would guide us into all truth. Not a book -- the New Testament was decades off; how did the Church stay in the truth? By God's Spirit.

(<no name>):

I Tim 3:16. What was scripture at that time? Not the New Testament -- it didn't exist. Be careful what you argue.

David: In quoting the Proverb, you cut off the New Testament. Is that what you mean? Why do you use it at all??

Update 3:

Chief:

Love is not worn on one's sleeve, but kept in one's heart. You don't know the inner thoughts of others.

Update 4:

Nous:

I was an active Protestant for decades. I have a pretty good feeling about what is generally taught -- even though it's all over the place doctrinally. Sola Scriptura (Scripture Only) is a basic tenet of the Protestant Reformation, along with several other "Solas". The doctrines of the Reformers reign supreme In matters of faith and doctrine in the churches of the Reformation (Lutheran, Presbyterian, Reformed, etc.) . Does the Bible agree with the underlying "solas"?

Update 5:

Dzr:

Of course God is active! He is not bound to a book! Now, for C/O (as you say), both scriptures and the Spirit are a guide to faith and doctrine, both in the early church and now. "It seemed good to the Spirit and to us" is embodied in the first doctrinal decision of the early Church. The bible and the Spirit are not at odds, for C/O,

The books of the NT were selected for their conformity to the oral tradition, and others rejected. Their interpretation must be kept intact, not reimagined.

Update 6:

God's Child:

I agree with much of that. Please also consider where the NT comes from, and why we have the books we do. The books were selected by the church -- a couple hundred years into the faith -- because they conformed to the oral tradition passed down by faithful men to the community of faith. We cannot ignore that leading and apply our own interpretation as applying to all.

Update 7:

(2nd no-name): "The Bible says...". Exactly. What gives the Bible that authority, and why should we believe it? *Because it conforms to what the apostles taught.* The Bible is what it is because the Church said so! And together, the scriptures and the apostolic doctrine as taught through history, and the guidance of the Spirit, we continue in the faith, without big disjunctures in doctrine as happened at the Reformation.

The Bible words are written with the help of Holy Spirit and not just man. That is why it is the Word of God.

Bible is different from any other book. When true believers read the Bible, the Holy Spirit speaks to them through those unchanging Words.

    ---------------------------

Godliness is not about religion or denomination or Church or Religious Customs. It is about Jesus and the greatest sacrifice ever made. Jesus opened the doors of Heavens to everyone who believes in the one true God(Father, Holy Spirit, Son) and believes in Christ ALONE(not self-righteousness, not religion, not sacraments, not Mary and not Saints) for salvation.

Every one who believes in Christ and accepts Him as his/her personal savior is a Church where Christ lives. The physical Church was built with the intention of praising and worshiping God with fellow believers, to spread the Gospel and to grow in Knowledge and Relationship with God.

Christians must get away from religious cults and follow Jesus.

It doesn't. Almost 400 years of tradition practiced before the letters of the Apostles, the words of Jesus and the rest of the scriptures were compiled into the bible by Catholic/Orthodox bishops.

Icons have been used in worship from the beginning along with tradition preserved by the Holy Spirit

    I am a Christian,

John 17:17 KJV  Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

God's word is the Bible and it is truth.

    In Christ's name

Psalm 138:2 - "God has magnified His Word above all His name."

To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

So obviously Roman Catholicism is in darkness.

And just to make it even clearer and more uncomfortable for you, God has magnified His word above even His name. Do Roman Catholics therefore claim greater authority than God's name?

I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

So now you have your two witnesses.

At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.

God in the Scriptures states that what is written there is inspired by Him and is thus His Written Word. Furthermore, Jesus says it is He who is the life, the way, and the truth. His Word is truth. Your question implies some other source of truth for Christians who are not Protestant. If that is so, then you call Christ a liar regarding what is recorded in Scripture.

The Bible doesn't say it's the only source of truth. The truth is that the square root of 81 is 9; the Bible says nothing about that truth. But I think I know what you are getting at. Below is the basic fundamental difference between Christian and Catholic.

    Christians believe this:

"Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2Tim 3:16-17).

    Catholics believe this:

Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, but it's NOT enough for the man of God to be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. He also needs the traditions of the Catholic Church (as the quote below shows ). In fact he needs them more. The scriptures are sort of a nice, but marginalized guideline.

Of course many if not most Catholics are going to kick and scream that their church does not teach that, but that’s only because they know even less about their church than the Bible.

“The true ‘rule of faith’-—as expressed in the Bible itself—-is Scripture PLUS apostolic tradition, as manifested in the living teaching authority of the Catholic Church” (emp. added, http://www.catholic.com/tracts/scripture-and-tradi...

If the Bible said both that the scriptures are enough for the man of God to be complete, and that the scriptures are not enough for the man of God to be complete because he also needs “apostolic tradition”, then the Bible has contradicted itself which would be proof that it is NOT the word of God. The Bible does not say that, only Catholic tradition says that it says that, which is a lie (cf. Mk 7:7,13).

Catholic traditions are simply additions to God’s word.

“Every word of God is flawless. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Don’t you add to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be found a liar” (Pr 30:5-6).
