Geldings or mares?
I haven’t had a mare before. What are the ups and downs for mares? Tell me your experience

I think mares are a little bit smarter than geldings and are more sensible. A great mare is better than a great gelding in my view. They are just a little bit more of a partner and helpful. Mares are incredibly sweet. Some mares have a real problem with hormones though and dealing with that can be a little bit more work. Most mares are fine though and are not a problem at all to deal with. You just expect them to rise above it and most do. I've never had a mare with hormone issues that needed treatment but I've watched others struggle with their mares. My favorite horse of all time was a mare. I've had a lot of really great geldings too. I wouldn't base a purchase decision on the mare vs. gelding debate. Just find a horse you mesh with that fits your list. That's hard enough!

I've always liked ridding mares. I like the sassy attitudes.

I have always likes mares best. They have a sense to them that a gelding doesn't have. I do NOT believe in letting my mares misbehave just because they are in season. Assuming there is not physical issue, they have to work just like I do. Mares are easy to spoil.
