    First, write the equation of the reaction

    Mg + O2 ----> MgO

    Next balance the equation

    2Mg + O2 ----> 2MgO

    Next:

    Change 12g Mg to moles

    12g/24g = >5moles of Mg

    Next:

    Use the mole ratios(the coefficients) in the balanced equation to find moles of O2 needed

    .5moles of Mg x 1moles of O2/2moles of Mg = .25moles of O2 = 8grams O2 used for .5 moles of Mg or 12 gMg
