The problem is that you want the simplistic, knee jerk, this makes me feel good, answers.
For example, the Civil War brought about an expansion of Federal powers over the state. That fundamentally changed how the country was governed.
It also brought about the standardization of clothing sizes. Before the Civil war, there was no standardization of clothing sizes. No Small, Medium, or Large. No size seven. No 18 shirt. The need to dress an entire army led to Federal standards that we use today.
See? Not pretty or sexy, but an influence you see all around you.
