What is a good (free) video player that I can watch mp4 and flv files?

I like MPC-HC because it is so lightweight and takes like no time to load even on my older comp. It can handle almost anything you want to play especially if you install it with K-Lite codec pack (which is entirely customizable). Free, no ads, minimal, give it a try.

vlc and mpc-hc are the top players used by most.
i use mpc but vlc actually has more features like streaming movies inside your home network, and you can even skin the whole player interface which i like, mpc only lets you skin the buttons. One thing very convenient with vlc is that you dont have to download extra codecs, it will play literally every video file there is. I started with mpc and know my way around it, thats why i use it
