Thousands of people have defected over the course of the past seven decades. One low-ranking, disease-ridden, parasite-infested, emaciated little soldier is a drop in the bucket in terms of how many people have flooded out of the DPRK since the division of the peninsula. It just so happens that his defection occurred during a period of heightened tensions. Things haven't been as bad as they are now in years. His case also received extra attention because he chose to cross into the South at a very visible and conspicuous spot on the border. He was fired upon, wounded, and the soldiers pursuing him crossed the border, violating the rules on enemy incursions. If things between the US and the North were not as bad as they are, and if the defection had occurred in an inconspicuous place, no one would have ever heard a peep about this one soldier. In this modern era, it's become increasingly difficult for the DPRK to keep its people from learning about the outside world.
