What's it like dating an Amish girl?

The Amish don't officially date. They have more a courtship that is done under the cover of the night as they say. Amish teens at the age of 16 can go to singings which is usually different Amish groups that meet together to sing and hang out. This is an opportunity for teens to meet their future husband or wife. All girls of age are escorted by a brother in the brother's wagon. If the girl meets a guy she likes and he likes her then he will tell her this by driving her home in his wagon. The will talk on the way home and if they do like each other they may wait to see each other at the next singing or plan to meet during the night.

The couple keep their relationship secret and due to all the work during the day they meet as they say "under the covering" of the night. It's done in private and either ride in a wagon or walk. If a boy wants to meet the girl he may signal her by shining a flashlight into her window at night.

Most parents and families do not know who their teen is dating until they are "published". This is when the pastor announces the up coming marriages for the fall. Almost all marriages are in the fall after harvest. Girls will hint of engagement by telling their mom to plant the celery which is a staple at the weddings.

Some customs may be different depending on which group but this is how most Amish groups works. This is an interesting read.
