What is an In-Line Compressor?

I've seen this advertiesed on new refrigerators lately. I know conventional older style compressors used to last for many years, then my mom bought a Kenmore with some new compressor that didn't last five years. Sears buit them that way on purpose to sell more appliances with only a 5-year life expectancy. Is this the same thing? Or some new scam?

As all Sears/Kenmore products are made by another company, the fridge your mom bought, under the Kenmore Elite badge most likely, was made by LG , and on their newer units, are using a new "inverter linear" compressor, which might be labeled "in-line" by Kenmore. Stay AWAY from those. Some reviews state only getting 18 months of service out of them.

They are suppose to be quieter and have less moving parts, but they do not last long at all, and for sure, it was the compressor that had failed, and not some other component.

Look for a fridge with manual cold controls and a good old regular hermetic compressor.

GoldStar, which has been around since 1958, then changed its name to LG in 1995, has always been a low quality, cheap product. IMO.

Kenmore USED to be made by Whirlpool, but now any Chinese company they can get. My '04 Kenmore was the worst refer I ever saw.. It burnt out in 6 years. And., I worked in an app store 3 years and cleaned refers from 1955.
