Why do you have to take a world language class in high school?

By the way I am in high school, so I'm taking it right this semester.

Update:

and we have to take it 2 years to get scholarships into a good school.

    If you learn well enough to become fluent, this could be helpful when applying for jobs. In a lot of other countries, many students leave high school knowing multiple languages.
