A thermodynamic calorie is define as the energy needed to heat one gram of water by one degree Celsius (with a few other specific that aren't important at this moment). the food Calorie (used with a capital C) is 1000 thermodynamic calories (or simply 1 kilocalorie). It is much easier for labeling and consumers to understand numbers like 250 Calories in a serving vs 250,000 calories in a serving.
In many countries outside the US, their labels have kcal (same as a Calories) and/or kJ (kilojoules).
