A subnet mask is an IP address that determines how many networks you have and how many hosts you have within your entire network.

An IP address is build up of two parts. The most significant part of the address defines the particular network or subnet work that the required host is connected to. The remainder of the address is used to identify the specific device on the subnet. The subnet mask defines which bits are for identifying the network and which bits are for the specific device on that network or subnet.
