For a number of reasons, such as she was beautiful but not classically beautiful, she was more a misfit with her looks, but she obviously cared for herself and that showed so that she looked beautiful even if she wasn't in the normal sense. She was a misfit, that also appealed to her gay fans, not to mention she had a perfect vocal instrument, her voice. Perfection and that's rare in this world. She was like Julie Andrews, a coloratura, or someone who had a rare quality to their voice that elevated them above other singers who sang in the same register. She was one of a kind and that made her more relatable to gay men, who were also a minority.
