Does a mechanic pay for damage the caused while fixing something else?

    Usually no. The issue gets worded in a way to be fixed for another reason. A stripped lug nut will be noted as already like that. Now if a car falls of the lift then insurance takes over. If the car gets scratched it is buffed out before returning.
