Whole grain bread is not bad for you. No bread is specifically 'bad' (harmful) for you, but bread made with refined (white) flour has no real nutritional value. If you're going to eat it, go for whole grain, and with as few ingredients as possible (avoid bread with lots of preservatives). Do some research on bread for clean eating diets. Ezekiel bread is usually listed as a good option, and it can be found in the freezer section of supermarkets that carry it (because it has no preservatives).

Whole grains are good for you (healthy carbs), but there are other healthy carbs as well.

It isn't good for you, it doesn't do a thing for your health. It's made with wheat which isn't good for you, either. Sugar isn't good for us at all while we are on the subject.

Only modern bread with white flour and added sugar.

    When grain bread is fine.

Sugar is NOT required for leavening. It just takes longer with whole wheat flour.

    It depends in what context.

White bread is more an "energy food" than a nutritional food, for want of a better description.

Most of the high-nutrition parts of the grain have been removed - the bran and germ - leaving basically starch.

That is easily and quickly broken down into sugars in the body.

Wholemeal or wholegrain bread still has the bran & germ included, so is quite a good source of some vitamins.

It's rather slower to digest, with some parts quickly digested and others rather more slowly.

"Granary" style, wholemeal with crushed grain or seeds added, is equally nutritious and even slower overall digestion.

Whole grains and seeds are one of the biggest parts of the "food pyramid" and are essential part of a balanced diet.

Foods that take longer to digest and convert to sugars (= lower glycemic index) mean that you do not feel hungry again so quickly, while with fast (high GI) foods you can feel hungry within a couple of hours.

If you are trying to limit calorie intake while keeping a balanced diet, wholemeal or granary are fine but try to avoid white bread; consider that the same class as potatoes and cakes/sweets, for an occasional change or treat only.

Bread is 'empty calories'. It has zero nutrients and raises the blood sugar quickly. Consume in very small quantities if at all.
