I call a number and it goes straight to voicemail, then I call that same number from my work phone and it rings. What can that be?

    Exactly as Billy says, they have your number setup to go to voicemail when you call. Being you call from work its not yours and it wi ring through. Or they got you on do not disturb or completely blocked you from calling

    When you called the number the first time, the person could already be on a different call.

    Sounds like they hair cellphone number blocked or set to some kind of DND
