Instead of just gritting their teeth and putting up with a tyrannical, spoiled dictator-monarch like has been the custom for over 1000 years, they actually declared independence and fought for it That was PROGRESSING forward.
Making religion separate from government affairs was a very LIBERATING idea since it never had been the case in their English (known) history.

Here's some proof for ya anonymous.
The Bill of Rights directly violates the ten commandments;
#1. You can have all the gods you want.
#2. Graven images are completely legal. They are even popular.
#3. Freedom of speech allows taking the lords name in vain.
#4. We don't have to have any Sabbath day, let alone Sunday.
#5. We don't have to honor our parents, Whether they are good or bad.
#6. The 2nd amendment is specifically for killing with militia's during war.
#7. Adultery is not actually a crime. Felony or misdemeanor.
#9. If lying were against the law then preachers and politicians would all be in jail.
#10. If coveting were a crime capitalism would not exist.
_The only one that is actually against the law is #8 stealing. So, if it were a test of our faith to not outlaw them, then that one would not be in there either.
