I need help with a quick algebra problem?

What is the value of the following expression 4x - y² when x = -3 and y = -2

I set the problem up like this (4 • -3) - (-2²) and got - 8 but I got it wrong does anyone know where I made a mistake?

Update:

wait nevermind now I'm getting -16 now from the equation 4(-3)-(-2)²

You should have (-2)² which means (-2)(-2) in other words 4.

Not -2² which means - (2²) in other words -4.

    -12 - (-2)^2 =

    -12 - 4 = -16
