According to the Guinness Book of world records, the longest homerun ever was measured by Roy Dizzy Carlyle in a minor league game. The ball?

...traveled 188 m (618ft) before landing on the ground outside the ball park.

a) Assuming the ball's initial velocity was 48 degrees above the horizontal and ignoring air resistance, what did the initial speed of the ball need to be to produce such a home run if the ball was hit at a point 0.9m (3.0 ft) above ground level? Assume that the ground was perfectly flat.

b) How far, in meters, would the ball be above a fence 3.0m(10ft) high if the fence was 116m (380ft) from the home plate?

    horizontal motion :

    Vo = 188/(t*cos 48) = 280.96/t

    vertical motion

    -0.9 = (Vo*sin 48)^2*t-4.903t^2

    -0.9-(280.96/t)*t+4.903t^2 = 0

    t = √281.86/4.903 = 7.582 sec

    Vo = 280.96/t = 37.06 m/sec

    t1 = 116/(37.06*0.6691) = 4.678 sec

    h1 = 37.06*0.7431*4.678-4.903*4.678^2 = 21.43 m ...fence is cleared by 18.43 meters
