What might I be able to do???

I can t apply for disability bc I ve never worked more than 4 months at a job due to my anxiety. But my anxiety is also a disability that causes me to not be able to really work. Is there anything I can apply for for help with income so this anxiety can just ease before I overdose again????

While you might not be eligible for social security disability benefits because you haven't worked and paid social security taxes long enough that doesn't mean that you might not be eligible for SSI disability benefits. SSI stands for supplemental security income which is a federal welfare program. If single you are allowed resources up to $2K; $3K if married. You are allowed unearned income up to $770 and earned income (wages) up to $1585.

However, here is social security's definition of disability - you must be so severely disabled that you are incapable of working and earning $1180 a month for at least 12 months in spite of treatment - that means seeing someone for your anxiety and taking your anti-anxiety meds. If under age 55 you must be unable to do ANY type of work not just work you've done. If age 55 or older you must be unable to do the same type of work you've done most in the 15 years before becoming disabled.

Unsuccessful work attempts - Work can be written off IF it doesn't exceed 3 months IF social security can verify with your employer that the work was unsuccessful because of your health problem.

The definition of disability for adults is the same for both the social security program and the SSI program.

  • You could register to get help with vocational rehab. They can help you use your skills in employment that is not so anxiety provoking. In the US, it is a free service offered by every state.

What are you living on now? You might be eligible to apply for SSI, if you have a record for severe anxiety and failed treatment.
