Who do you complain to when you think the electric company is ripping you off?

I live in a town with a Co-Op electric company. It is the only provider in the area, so I cant switch providers. The trouble is, I received my January bill and it was almost 500.00. It tripled from the month before.

I took to Facebook and found several, dozens actually who have the same problem - some people got billed up to 700.00 for one month!

The consensus is, that the company is ripping off its customers, but who do you complain too?

Complain to the PUC (Public Utilities Commission). But are you sure the previous bills hadn't just been estimated?

FIRST---did you call the company and inquire if it MIGHT BE A BILLING ERROR ?? Also, there is a Utility Regulatory Commission (or equivalent) in every municipality, so if you determine it is NOT a billing error, complain to the regulators.

We've had one of the coldest January's in many years. My January bill doubled from December's. So I can't really say I'm surprised here. January this year was 10 degrees colder than January last year.

If you live in a cold Northern state, I can see you having a huge increase from December. December's weather was mild, and January was bitterly cold & windy. Check this stuff out.

each state has a public utilities agency at state level you can complain when you feel that your services and charges are not right

you start by asking them to check your meter for accuracy; you can also ask neighbors about their electric bill

You are not alone, there are reports of this all across the nation. Don;t know where you are but if you live in an area that experienced the record cold weather in Dec and in Jan, then that is the reason. There is something else happening with bills, or at least my bill now. The taxes, fee's transmission charges, ect.. Basically all the other crap, is now more then the charge for the actual power.

Start by comparing your usage and the Kwh charge. January was very cold across most of the country so people used more electricity to heat their homes. If your usage is up, then you have found the cause and there is no one to complain to. If usage is roughly the same, call the Co-op to find out whether the previous month's charge was an estimate or a real reading - if it was an estimate and this month was a real reading, then last month's estimate was probably low and you are making up for not paying enough.

Finally, if the KwH charge is up, you need to find out of they were granted a rate increase that is kicking in now in which case you are not being ripped off but like anything else, costs are up and passed on to you.

Before you can complain, you need to have a basis for your complaint and those are the three major influences on your bill, none of which will be solved by complaining since they are all legit.
