Algebra 2 help?

Find (3f+g) (-4) using method 1: First combine the functions. Then you can plug the given value into the simplified function.

f(x) = x+1; g(x) = (x+3)²

This is the first step: 3(x+1) + (x+3)²

3x+3 + (x+3)²

3x+3 + x² + 6x +9

I don't know where the 6x came from can someone please explain this to me.

    (x+3) times (x+3) = x^2 +3x + 3x + 9 = x^2 +6x + 9

    so final answer is: x^2 + 9x + 12
