A modem (modulator–demodulator) is a network hardware device that modulates one or more carrier wave signals to encode digital information for transmission and demodulates signals to decode the transmitted information. The goal is to produce a signal that can be transmitted easily and decoded to reproduce the original digital data. Modems can be used with any means of transmitting analog signals, from light-emitting diodes to radio.

It is device that helps your PC to communicate with internet.Simply saying it translates internet language to the language that can be understood by computer,And back translates computer language the way it can be transfered through internet.

If you from your Pc send message to different PC message goes to your modem .

Modem changes it's configuraration ( modulates digital signal from PC to analog signal)) to internet language. Analog signal via internet goes to computer you address the message.Another modem translates internet signal to signal readable by PC

(demodulates - converts analog signal to digital signal ).

Modulator-demodulator in one device is called modem

A modem is purely a device that converts between the forms of data signal sent across a phone line, TV type cable, fibre optic or Satellite connection into a different form suitable for digital devices. Free standing modems started by converting a phone line to an RS232 interface. Early Broadband modems converted the broadband signals to USB. Modern modems normally convert the incoming ISP connection to Ethernet.

PCs with the appropriate interfaces (hardware and drivers) are able to connect directly to modems and use these to connect to the Internet through a service provider. However, in this configuration only that one PC can connect to the modem so there is no sharing of the Internet connection.

In most households, however, the modem is connected to a router. The router allows multiple devices to connect by Ethernet or WiFi and in some cases by USB to be connected in a private network in the home and also allow access from that network to a shared Internet connection through the modem. The router includes several features:

    1) Network Address Translation (NAT), which allows multiple devices each with their own unique address on the private network to share the single public address coming through the modem from the Internet Service Provider.

    2) A DHCP service. This is a mechanism that can automatically assign unique addresses to devices on the private network. If two devices have the same address they will interfere with each other. Providing unique addresses automatically eliminates the need to configure each device manually with the required information.

    3) A firewall to help protect devices on the private network from attack from the Internet.

Some routers have other features, but these are not really relevant to this general discussion.

Some routers have an integrated modem so that an external modem is not required. These routers can connect only to the specific type of incoming connection coming from the Service Provider. The interface between the integrated modem and the actual router is not accessible as it is concealed inside the combined unit.

    I hope this helps.

A Modem converts between analog signals such as on your phone line or cable TV system, and digital formats such as Ethernet.

In one of the earliest and simplest form, the analog side was two different pairs of audio tones, with one frequency of a pair representing a digital 0 and the other representing a 1.

The lower pitch pair was used to send data one way and the higher pitched pair for sending data the other way.

    [eg. 980Hz & 1180Hz one way, 1650Hz & 1850Hz the other way]

Modern high speed systems are vastly more complex but the analog <> digital interchange is still what makes it a Modem.

A lot of home routers have the modem section built in as part of the overall unit.

Modem is an acronym for modulator/demodulator. This is the hardware that handles the transport layer of digital communications across a network.
