It's basically a matter of brain chemistry. In someone with ADHD, the neurons in their brain are over-stimulated, firing chemical signals all the time. The drug mimics that same chemical signal, essentially tricking the neurons that they don't need to fire so much. It's a bit like shocking someone who's got an erratic heartbeat... that stimulus prompts the heart to go back to a normal rhythm.

For patients who truly have an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, psycho-stimulates typically have a Positive Paradoxical Effect. However, various medications exist to moderate ADHD symptoms and can have an Untoward Effect to include but not limited to decreased functioning. In regards to individuals void of an ADHD, psycho-stimulates typically result in heightened central nervous system functioning!
