Am I better off buying a smart-phone through my carrier (Verizon) or buying the phone from the company who makes the phone?

    It does not really matter. But the carries will be willing to finance it by adding the cost to your monthly price. Myself, whenever my daughter gets a new phone I just take her old one. Her old iPhone 6 does more than everything I need.
