How did war with Austria help unite northern Italy?

In the 1840's large portions of Northern Italy were still Crown Lands of the Hapsburgs. The war/with French help, essentially drove out the Hapsburgs and allowed the Italian states to chart their own course, unite under one government.

Because they knew they would be defeated and ran over one by one if they didn’t unite.

I have never personally gone to war with Austria, but I probably wouldn't recommend it
