Camping , lots of camp sites and lots of these camping sites have bathrooms and showers. All you need is a small tent.
Look up things do in the City of California you want to visit.

Drive to greater LA and just follow your nose. There are inexpensive hotels and motels all over, as well as restaurants. Go to the beach, walk around Hollywood Blvd. There's lots of stuff to do that is free or cheap. Head down to San Diego.....

You could follow the migrant fruit and vegetable pickers throughout California farms.
