A particular smelting furnace is capable of delivering 375 kcal of heat to a solid block of lead that has previously been heated to its melting point of 328 C.

How many Joules (J) of heat are in 375 kcal? & If the entire block of lead is melted with no heat to spare, what was its mass?

    First is just a conversion from kcal to J

    375 kcal = 1569000 J

    Lead Heat of fusion 4.77 kJ/mol

    atomic mass 207.2 g/mole

    1569 kJ = 4.77 kJ/mol x M

    M = 329 mole

    329 mole x 207.2 g/mole = 68200 g or 68.2 kg
