I think it's an intrusion into people's freedom. Am i not even allowed to drive my own car anymore.

No. There will always be times where it's critical that there's human input. Imagine a cyber attack where the GPS controlling driverless cars went down. It's really important that enough of the general population develops and maintains skills such as driving. I can, however, imagine a future where freeways are totally automated and cars travel in platoons until they reach their designated slip road.
