Looking for a mic to use on my 600D camera for youtube.?
Hi,
I m about to begin my YouTube journey & I m needing a little help before I proceed.
I ll be using my 600D DSLR to record. What I m looking for is a good mic to plug into the camera, preferably one that doesn t pick up much background noise.
I previously purchased a small mic that attaches onto the hot shoe but that s no good as It s picking up too much extra static and I m thinking it s to do with the distance from me.

What do you consider static? Static is usually crackly type of noise.
A shotgun mic is directional and helps get rid of background sounds around you and reduces echo. You can get cheap shotgun mics, but they have higher electronic noise than other mics due to the way they are used.
A lapel or lavalier mic is near you which means the gain can be set lower which reduces picking up noises you don't want. With this option, you can get wireless versions.
A desktop (handheld performance) (also dynamic) mic has high sensitivity which means you get less electronic noise (background hiss). Desktop mics can have directional patterns which reduces background sounds.
Main thing, get the mic as close to you as possible. Having a small mixing board is also helpful if you need to record multiple channels.
You should set your camera to manual gain for audio. This prevents pumping of the audio. AGC (automatic gain control) should never be used for studio work. Heck, I never used AGC when shooting videos of theatre performances.

Not sure about the mic, but if you haven't done so already, you have to get the Magic Lantern firmware upgrade for your 600D.
Magic Lantern's firmware upgrade adds a ton of useful features that you will need when making videos. Plus it's free.

First the dSLR was never made to do video. It is an image capturing device so don't even expect sound to be decent. The best way to go about this is to use the mic with a portable digital audio recorder then sync both video and sound in the computer later.

Get a dynamic mic rather than a condenser or electret model.
Other than that, choose an appropriate pickup pattern.
It is Absolutely Vital to get Any mic as close as possible to the sound source
to minimize pickup of stray noises.
