Part of me wants to say 12-Gauge just because... but in reality the 20-gauge is going to have a far less brutal recoil, making it easier to get back onto target for follow up shots. At close range inside the home 15-20' max, the loss of hitting power isn't going to be an issue.

I give an edge to the 12 bore with the substantially greater weight of shot, but I've been shooting a long time, and I'm of a decent size. My better half is diminutive, and she'd probably handle a 20 bore better, but she doesn't like long guns, so her plan is to stick to her revolvers.

European designation of what the US just calls 12 Gauge (2 3/4 inch hulls) is 12/70mm. The case/hull is 70mm long.
Having said that... 12 gauge every time.
