What lignin chemically??

    It is relatively non polar water repelling parts of the plant. It helps transport water in the xylem of plants more efficiently. It is like the rubber on a hose that keeps the water in.

    It's a mess actually. It's not as well-defined as cellulose, and it even varies from one species of plant to another. But it's some kind of phenol-based polymer.
