Buy an antenna. Plug antenna into your TV. Use the TV remote to scan for channels.
Voila. You now have PBS, plus whatever other channels are in your area. For free.

You can receive the local PBS station by getting your TV over the air.
I do not have cable, just a circular antenna in the attic, and a cable down to the TV.
For the record, I do contribute directly every year- which gets me some significant discounts.

If you want childrens programs , it appears to have the latest season only for several shows .
Buy a ROKU ($40) and sign up for PBSKids Roku Channel to see several kid's show on Demand
The Roku is a one time fee until it wears out. PBSKids channel is free.

2. Set the channel to the channel of the local PBS station
3. Watch. No need to send a check anywhere.
